what it is
eve is an Apache-2.0 TypeScript framework from Vercel for building durable backend AI agents. You define an agent with files: agent/instructions.md for its system prompt, agent/agent.ts for the model and runtime settings, plus folders for tools, skills and subagents. eve runs it with checkpointed, durable steps, so long-running work survives restarts. You can deploy it to Vercel (Vercel Workflow and Vercel Sandbox) or self-host it as a Node service or container. eve is currently in beta.
who it's for
Developers and teams who want to build their own production agents in code (Slack bots, web chat agents, scheduled or webhook-driven agents) and keep control of where they run, instead of using a hosted agent product.
how to start
- 1Install Node.js 24 or newer (npm comes with it).
- 2Create a project: npx eve@latest init my-agent. This scaffolds the project, installs dependencies, initializes Git and opens the terminal UI.
- 3Connect a model when prompted: a ChatGPT subscription, a Vercel account, or an AI Gateway, OpenAI or Anthropic API key.
- 4Send your first message, then edit agent/instructions.md to change its behavior and agent/agent.ts to set its model. eve reloads changes as you work.
- 5Later, run cd my-agent and npm run dev to reopen the session. Use /add in the terminal UI to add channels such as Slack or iMessage.
- 6To add eve to an existing project instead, run npx eve@latest init . from its root, or install manually: npm install eve@latest ai zod.
- 7To ship it, run eve build and deploy to Vercel or self-host the Node output. Follow the deployment guide: eve.dev/docs/guides/deployment/overview
